A YELLOW WARNING for wind and rain has been issued across Scotland for today, and Ayrshire is one of the various regions affected.

The Met Office issued the alert earlier this week with periods of strong gusts, reaching up to 50-55 miles per hour, and heavy downpours to be on the way.

With South and North Ayrshire Council being coastal areas, the Office has predicted winds to reach 60 to 70 miles per hour and are asking people in those regions to take extra care.

Road, rail, and ferry transport delays are said to be “likely” throughout today with the possibility of “short-term power loss”.

Giving public advice on managing the conditions, a spokesperson from the Met Office said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.

“Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead.”

Anyone in an emergency in coastal parts of the region are urged to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Winds will ease from the north throughout the day as the warning sits in place until 8pm tonight.
