Campaign groups fighting for the future of Ardrossan Harbour have reacted to the news of the Scottish government’s official purchase of the site.
A deal was struck nearly a fortnight ago between public bodies Peel Ports and Caledonian Maritime Assets LTD for the North Ayrshire port.
The site now officially goes into public ownership with CMAL, who already own 27 west coast harbours, taking control on behalf of the government.
The cost agreed between the two parties is still unknown for the harbour, which was forced to close their primary, and sometimes secondary, Irish Berth in 2024 due to “safety concerns”.
Save Ardrossan Harbour, one of two campaign groups, expressed their joy at the news that they believe was “long-awaited”.
A Facebook post from the group read: “We are delighted to share this news and thank CMAL, Peel Ports and the Scottish Government for working continuously to get us to this point.
“It is with great excitement we look towards the future as this is a significant step forward in securing Ardrossan as the primary mainland port for Arran and beyond.”
Matthew McGowan, member of the SAR group, added his positivity on the latest update, but acknowledges further work and planning are to come in the next year.
He said: “The next stage is crucial. We are hoping to hear real plans for the necessary upgrade sooner rather than later.
“I hope there will be engagement with the public about the proposed plans. The Irish Berth is crucial to provide year round resilience, particularly with the difficulties we’ve had recently with cancellations due to string easterly winds.”
CMAL, in addition to its 27 harbours, has 37 west coast ferries in its portfolios, including the MV Isle of Arran and MV Caledonian.
Services to Brodick Pier from Ardrossan are currently experiencing disruptions as the campaign groups hope to “push for a solution for their communities”.
