Record-breaking piping event looks to build

A Scottish pipe band community for schools has praised a recent “record-breaking” event in Ayrshire, and is looking to build for next year.

Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust (SSPDT) gave thanks to 172 schools that attended this years Championships at Kilmarnock’s William McIlvanney Campus on Sunday 8 March.

The packed event hosted the likes of Irvine schools, Strathmore schools, and Edinburgh’s George Watson College competing in  categories such as freestyle and quartets.

Following the trust celebrating the event, they are now looking to continue this years success with a public survey towards for the 2027 championships.

A spokesperson from the SSPDT said: “A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us, supported us, and helped make this years Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships such a success.

“The energy, talent and commitment on display was outstanding – and we’re so grateful to every person who played a part.

“We’d love to hear from you. Your feedback helps us keep growing, keep improving, and keep creating meaningful experiences for everyone involved.”

Provost of East Ayrshire, Councillor Claire Leitch, added her praise for the competition, saying that it was “truly inspiring” whilst being in attendance.

Leitch said: “It was a pleasure to see Kilmarnock filled with the sound of the pipes and drums as so many talented young musicians gathered for this year’s Championships.

“East Ayrshire is proud to have hosted a competition that not only celebrates excellence in piping and drumming but also highlights how inclusive and accessible this tradition is becoming for young people across Scotland.”

Strathmore Schools came out on top in the event’s freestyle category, winning the highest prize money amount of £1500.

Sunday marked the 12th annual SSPB Championships, with the William McIlvanney campus hosting the event for the fifth time.
