Ayr United manager Scott Brown hailed an “important clean sheet” as his side played out a goalless draw with Partick Thistle at Somerset Park.
The first chance of the contest fell to United’s Ethan Walker inside eight minutes. Fullback Scott McMann played a low cross to the Englishman who saw his goal-bound effort tipped over by former loan keeper Josh Clark in the Jags goal.
The visitors had their turn before the half hour mark to open the scoring through Alex Samuel from close range, but the former Ross County striker drew a crucial stop from Ayr stopper Liam Russell.
Another former United loanee was given a golden opportunity to give the Jags the lead before the break. Logan Chalmers saw his attempted lob past Russell sail over the bar following a through ball from midfield.
Walker would again be gifted a chance to put the Honest Men ahead before the hour mark. A through ball from the experienced Jamie Murphy found the attacker in space who placed his lobbed shot wide of the target.
Stopper Clarke would be called into action to deny substitute Anton Dowds as his low strike was tipped wide of the target when it was destined to find the bottom corner.
Following the game, United boss Brown said: “Partick were the better team in the first half and we defended really, but we spent a lot of time defending. We tweaked the shape and in the second half we had clear cut chances.
“The players had the willingness, the energy levels, and the anticipation to win second balls was very good. The clean sheet is important for us, that being the third one in a row, but we really should have scored .
“Josh was here last year being very good and makes a great save against Anton when it’s going in the bottom corner. That’s what you want, your goalkeepers to be worked hard.”
United next host League One side Peterhead in the KDM Evolution Trophy on Tuesday evening before taking on Championship leaders St Johnstone.
