An Ayrshire gardening community has shared the “devastating” news of damage done to growing efforts in their greenhouse, and people in the local are have reached out with their support.

Eglinton Community Gardens shared a video on social media this morning (21 May) showing the destruction caused by “mindless” people to the site in near Kilwinning the previous night.

The North Ayrshire group condemned the act committed on their vegetation patch, which was grown as a contribution to Green Health Week.

A Facebook post from ECG said: “Devastating news this morning. I’m afraid we had visitors yesterday evening who have completely desttoyed this years growing efforts of our volunteers.

“At this moment, we have no words for this selfishness.”

Residents in the local area took to social media in support of the Community Gardens’ loss, with some saying they are “shocked and dismayed” at this recent development.

One user said: “There has been a lot of vandalism in the area recently, but this is a new low. I’m broken for everyone who gets pleasure from the community gardens.”

Another said: “This is just devastating to see. All the hard work done by volunteers ruined by a few mindless vandals with not thought about the repercussions of their actions. I hope you can rebuild in time.”

Further comments on the post encouraged the group to open a GoFundMe or CrowdFunding page believing people will “pull together” following the vandalism.

Eglinton Community Gardens is a volunteer-led 1.75 hectares land who support those wanting to fulfil their goals with a main focus on growing food.

Green Health Week runs from 18 May to 24 May with the main purpose connecting people and nature in addition to promoting public health and wellbeing benefits through national and local partners.
