An Ayr bakery has been saved by a celebrity’s donation after being scammed out of £8,000.

The Rebel Bakery, located in North Harbour Industrial Estate, was given a £7,000 donation by entrepreneur Steven Bartlett after being targeted last week.

Cafe owner Rachel Munro discovered that £8,000 had been taken from the business account following a phone call from someone posing as a fraud prevention team.

When Munro reported the fraud to her bank, they refused to reimburse her as they claimed the payment appeared as authorised.

Ms Munro said: “That £8,000 wasn’t spare money, It was ingredient costs, packaging, wages, deliveries, and the cash that keeps the business trading every week.

“I’ve spent years building my business from the ground up, long days, long nights, reinvesting everything back, and doing things properly.

“Without this money, my business genuinely risks grinding to a halt, because I was targeted by criminals and then abandoned by the system meant to protect customers from fraud.”

Dragons Den star Bartlett, who hosts the popular entrepreneurial podcast Diary of a CEO, is yet to comment on his generous actions towards the Ayrshire bakery.

The business opened in February 2024 as a “dedicated allergen-free” bakery, which produces around 10,000 cookies per day.

Any donations to The Rebel Bakery can be given here.
