An Ayrshire native prison chaplain has been nominated to become the next Moderator of the Church of Scotland.

Reverend Jill Clancy, originally from Kilwinning, works at HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow and will take up the year-long position next May, becoming the first prison chaplain to be nominated for the role.

The 56-year-old has worked at Barlinnie for nine years and previously served at HMP Kilmarnock and churches across Ayrshire.

She will also become only the seventh woman to hold the position in the church’s 466-year history.

Rev Clancy says love will be the central theme of her year as she prepares to represent the church across Scotland and internationally.
