South Ayrshire Council has received national recognition after winning a prestigious award for its work to improve town centres and support people facing employment issues.
The council’s Environmental Town Centre Programme was named Best Community and Neighbourhood Initiative at the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Service Awards 2026.
The programme, delivered by the council’s Thriving Communities team in partnership with Waste Management, aims to create cleaner and more welcoming environments across the region.
Participants work alongside the council’s Waste Management team to carry out tasks including litter picking, street sweeping, graffiti removal, and weeding.
The work has helped improve the appearance of town centres in Ayr, Maybole and Girvan, while also providing participants with practical skills and increased confidence.
The initiative is also designed to help people facing employment struggles progress towards further training, volunteering and job openings
In praising this recognition, Cllr Brian Connolly said: “This award is an outstanding achievement which reflects the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the Environmental Town Centre Programme.
“We often talk about the importance of investing in people and places, and this programme does exactly that. It is transforming local environments, creating opportunities for individuals and strengthening communities across South Ayrshire.
“I would like to thank all those involved for their commitment and congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.”
Programme supervisors Billy Reid and Jamie Cook also praised the commitment of participants and council staff, highlighting the positive difference being made to local neighbourhoods.
