Ayrshire councils merger idea explored

The possibility of merging North, South and East Ayrshire councils is being explored as part of a wider Scottish Government programme looking at public sector reform.

The discussions could lead to changes in how local services are structured and delivered, with a possible single Ayrshire authority being considered.

North Ayrshire councillor Alan Hill said there could be benefits from bringing some services together while retaining decision-making at a local level.

Councillor Ian Murdoch raised concerns for the proposal after not being invited to an initial meeting.
