LOOKING FORWARD: Staff and pupils at Hurlford Primary recognise their STEM award (Image: East Ayrshire Council)
An East Ayrshire school has been praised for their STEM Nation Award recognition of its outstanding commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
Hurlford Primary School and Early Childhood Centre has delivered an ambitious STEM curriculum, with staff working closely with industry partners such as SP Energy Networks and Aerospace Kinross to enhance learning experiences.
The school’s innovative approach was highlighted during a recent HMIE inspection and continues to influence curriculum development and pupils’ connections to the world of work.
Families also play an active role in shaping learning opportunities, helping to strengthen engagement between the school and the wider community.
Staff have recognised the positive impact STEM learning is having on pupil engagement in the classroom.
Headteacher Gillian Campbell recognised her school’s worth following this recent achievement.
She said: “Over the last five years, the school has worked hard to engage and inspire learners through our STEM developments. We are absolutely delighted to be awarded the STEM Nation Award.
“I am incredibly proud of our staff for their commitment to embedding STEM across our curriculum, and of our pupils, parents and partners for their continued support and participation in STEM activities.
“This award reflects the hard work of our whole school community and we are excited to continue on our STEM Nation journey.”
The school has also invested in-staff training to challenge gender stereotypes and address unconscious bias, encouraging greater diversity and inclusion within STEM subjects.
The introduction of the Skills Development Scotland meta-skills framework and profiling tool is helping pupils identify the skills they are developing through STEM activities while exploring future education and career pathways.
