A young Ayrshire musician has been praised for receiving acclaim following a national event, and is believed to be a “significant milestone” for his high school.
Jake Kenny, who attends Garnock Community Campus , was named runner-up at the prestigious Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer Final held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on May 24.
The competition saw contestants from all 32 local authorities in the nation playing for the top prize, with Kenny performing “outstanding” renditions of Muse’s “Hysteria” and Primus’ “Tommy the Cat” on bass guitar.
The adjudication panel for the event heralded the North Ayrshire pupil for his display of “exceptional technical ability and musicianship”.
Joining in with praising Kenny’s efforts, Provost Anthea Dickson believes there is pride to be felt by everyone connected to this achievement.
She said: “Jake’s remarkable journey from his first public performance just months ago to a national podium finish highlights both his dedication and natural talent.
“From North Ayrshire Young Musician of the Year to runner-up in the Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer Final is a tremendous achievement.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged Jake and a special thanks to the music instructors at North Ayrshire Music Service who have championed him every step of the way.”
Caroline Shedden, Faculty Leader of Music and Drama at Garnock Community Campus, revealed that bass guitar was Kenny’s second instrument, adding this latest achievement to be “the proudest moment of her career”.
A grateful Kenny, reflecting on this recent success, said: To be recognised as runner-up in the competition is a massive achievement for me, especially on a unique instrument going against classically trained musicians.
“It was an amazing experience to play in front of such as great audience in such a prestigious venue, and I’m also very thankful to my teachers and everyone that has supported me along the way.”
Jake shared the honour with Falkirk accordionist Daniel Small, as singer Kai Fitzharris from Inverclyde was made the overall winner of the competition.
The Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year is a nation-wide competition which was started in 2022 by the Music Education Partnership Group, bringing together top instrumentalists from all local authorities.
