The Killie Community Hub welcomed a special visitor as the Commonwealth Games Baton continued its journey around Scotland.

The Kilmarnock hub was chosen as the only stop in the town to host the Baton, creating a memorable occasion for the local community ahead of this summer’s games.

Residents, supporters and visitors gathered to celebrate the arrival of the Baton and athlete Drew Burns, who makes his first Commonwealth Games appearance for weightlifting.

The event highlighted the role sport plays in bringing people together while also celebrating the people and organisations helping to inspire others across Ayrshire.

Among those recognised was former Scotland coach Charles Hamilton for his dedication and contribution to Kilmarnock Weightlifting Club for over 50 years.

Speaking to The Killie Community on social media, Hamilton revealed how grateful he was to be recognised following previous experiences with his health.

He said: “This is a proud day for me, not only because of weightlifting but I’m a double kidney transplant patient. I had a transplant two years ago, and it failed.

“I was on Dialysis for a year, and i got a new kidney on Christmas Day, and now we’re here.”

His commitment and support for the club was praised as an important part of the local sporting community.

The visit also included good wishes for debutant Burns ahead of competing at the Commonwealth Games, with the community showing its support and promising to cheer him on.

The Killie Community Hub said the occasion was a proud moment, with many people coming together to celebrate the Commonwealth Baton’s journey through Scotland.

The event served as a reminder of the power of sport to inspire and create connections with the Baton’s visit leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.

The Commonwealth Games kicks off on Thursday 23 July in Glasgow with an opening ceremony at the city’s OVO Hydro.
