Voting is now underway across Ayrshire to decide the region’s next MSPs. Polling stations opened at 7am today across various facilities in the region and will stay open until 10pm, with voting counts set for Friday. Constituencies including Ayr, Cunninghame South and Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley are all part of the decision in this latest Scottish Parliament election.
Young people from six South Ayrshire secondary schools took part in a modern languages football competition designed to combine sport, creativity and language learning. Rail passengers across Ayrshire are facing disruption after a problem was reported on the line between Kilwinning and Lochwinnoch. ScotRail says there’s an issue with an overhead line, with Network Rail engineers being sent out to assess it. Passengers are being urged to check the ScotRail app for the latest updates with tickets being accepted on the number 38 McGills service from Milliken Park to Glasgow.
East Ayrshire has been named one of the most affordable areas in the UK for mortgage repayments. New figures show that homeowners in the area typically spend around 17 per cent of their gross income on mortgage costs. North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire also ranked highly, placing within the UK’s top ten most affordable areas to highlight the regions' relative affordability compared to other parts of the country.
The charity shop at Woodland View in Irvine has marked its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of supporting patients and families at the mental health hospital. The shop, run by around 30 volunteers, provides everyday essentials and small comforts to those staying at the facility. Since opening in 2016, the initiative has raised approximately £94,000 for the Woodland View fund to provide equipment, patient care items and welcome packs for those admitted at short notice.
Inspectors have called for additional support to help improve attainment levels at Irvine Royal Academy. A recent inspection highlighted concerns around pupil achievement, with the school receiving a “weak” grading in that area. However, the report also praised the school’s leadership and supportive environment rating “very good” for wellbeing, equality and inclusion Inspectors noted a strong sense of community among pupils, staff and parents as a follow-up inspection is expected within 18 months.

Plans for a new Marks and Spencer foodhall in Kilmarnock have been approved by East Ayrshire Council, paving the way for a major retail shift in the town. The new store will be located at Queen’s Drive Retail Park and is expected to safeguard 71 existing jobs. Irvine has marked the legacy of one of its most famous historical figures with the annual John Galt Lecture. The event, held at the Wellwood Burns Centre and Museum, celebrated the life of the novelist, poet and entrepreneur, who was born in the town in 1779.
