Squash club prepares for 24-hour fundraiser

An Ayrshire sports club is preparing to take on a 24-hour fundraising challenge in support of a regional charity. Townend Squash Club in Dreghorn Squashathon for Ayrshire Hospice will run from Saturday, July 18 into Sunday, July 19, with members keeping a squash ball in play for a full 24 hours . A new soft play and café is set to open in Ayr’s Kyle Shopping Centre, with the owner aiming to create a family-focused community hub. The venue named Playr will open in the former Topshop unit in September, with owner Heather Hayward hoping to create local employment opportunities and support suppliers in the area. Campbell strikes European basketball glory

A man from Troon has helped the Great Britain over-70s men’s basketball team retain their European title in Athens, Greece. Former Marr College teacher Tom Campbell, despite suffering a serious injury in the opening game,  played an important role in the team’s semi-final and final victories.  The final against Italy saw him contribute eight rebounds and 10 assists as GB secured a 53-22 victory. Ferry-goers given disruption warning

Passengers travelling between Largs and Cumbrae have been warned of possible disruption due to essential maintenance work on the MV Loch Tarbert. CalMac said the ferry’s sailings are liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice while the work is carried out. The affected crossings include the 9.30am and 10.10am departures from Largs, along with the 9.50am and 10.30am sailings from Cumbrae. Passengers are being advised to check for updates before travelling and allow extra time for their journey.

The new Sea Monster playpark at Irvine Harbourside is expected to open before the end of summer 2026 as work continues on the wider regeneration of the area. Historic Arran hotel set for Buzzworks deal

Buzzworks has announced plans to acquire the historic Douglas Hotel in Brodick, with the deal currently subject to completion. The landmark hotel, which overlooks Brodick Bay and Goatfell, will continue operating throughout the summer before temporarily closing during autumn and winter for a major refurbishment. It is expected to reopen in spring 2027 as part of the Buzzworks House Collection, offering refurbished accommodation along with a modern pub and restaurant while retaining the building's historic character.

East Ayrshire Council is developing plans to introduce a network of Family Hubs designed to support families before problems reach crisis point. Council leader Douglas Reid said the hubs would bring education, health and support services together to help people facing issues such as poverty, poor mental health, addiction and unemployment.
