Glasgow Prestwick Airport welcomed the arrival of a rare fighter plane to their runway , to mark a special aviation anniversary.

A two-seated Spitfire, painted in its original prototype colours, landed in Ayrshire on Friday March 10 to commemorate 90 years since the first flight of Supermarine Spitfire.

Several Royal Air Force veterans and two Cadets greeted the aircraft upon its arrival, in a moment the airport is calling  “historic”.

The Spitfire, was also accompanied by a Typhoon jet coming into land at Prestwick which, according to amac media, was selected as “one of the small number of airfield destinations” to mark the occasion.

Recapping the events, a spokesperson from Glasgow Prestwick Airport said: “Visitors gathered around the mound and perimeter to watch the aircraft arrive, while on the ground we heard wonderful stories and reflections from those who met it.

“As if the occasion wasn’t special enough, we were treated to near perfect weather – a blue sky that made the Spitfire’s arrival even more spectacular.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came along, parked considerably, and helped make the visit such a memorable and safe occasion for all.”

The iconic Supermarine Spitfire played a vital part during the Battle of Britain in 1940, defeating Luftwaffe air attacks in the process.

Spitfires have been recognised for outnumbering any other British combat aircraft being built, with over 20,00 in total since World War Two.
