The Met Office has given advice for the people of Ayrshire for a yellow thunder warning following a spell of high temperatures across the country.

The warning, in place until 3am on Saturday morning, comes after highs of around 30 degrees were recorded in the region towards the end of the week.

Thunder and  heavy rain spells can be expected throughout today as the Met Office urges people to protect themselves throughout this period which “may cause some disruption” .

Homes and businesses are places that could be damaged with potential flooding as lightning strikes and strong winds are noted to cause delays and cancellations for public transport.

A spokesperson from the Met Office website said: “Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before gusty winds arrived, check to ensure movable objects or temporary structures are well secured including bins, garden furniture and sheds.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter and not under trees or other structures which may be struck by lightning.”

The Met Office added for locals to stay up to date with their forecast in their surrounding area and prepare in advance for potential power cuts with essentials such as torches and mobile phone power packs.

Vehicles out on the road are a further area for caution due to metal roofs and frames which could be affected with a strike of lightning.

Highs of 26 degrees are expected today with increased chances of rainfall into the mid to late afternoon.
