Sports community organisations in East Ayrshire have been given civic recognition by the council following recent “outstanding contributions and inspiring stories”.
Scott Montgomery from The Killie Community and Shortlees Amateurs were invited to Council HQ last week to be presented with certificates by Provost Claire Leitch.
Montgomery, who was named Employee of the Year at the Scottish Charity Awards in June, was acknowledged for his work through the organisation where he sought support following a devastating family loss.
Now a full-time Hub Operations and Engagement lead at the Killie Community, Montgomery is leading a variety of activities to assist those facing bereavement, poor physical and mental health and social isolation.
Provost Leitch added her praise for the Kilmarnock local’s impact in giving his time and effort to “improving lives”.
Leitch said: “Scott’s national award celebrates far more than his professional success – it reflects the care, strength and kindness he shows to everyone who comes through the doors of the Killie Community.
“His story demonstrates the vital role of the third sector, the unique ability of football to bring people together, and the real difference that community-based support can make.”

In inviting Shortlees, who added an Ayrshire Premier Division title and Scottish Amateur Cup to their trophy cabinet, Leitch added: “The whole team clearly has a winning mentality, and thanks to the support and the hard work of those involved with the club, they have become the best amateur team in Scotland.
“They are fantastic role models for our young people, and I wish them every success in the future.”
The Killie Community’s Montgomery was also noted for using lived experience in his approach to lend a hand to those in need for confidence building and wellbeing improvement.
Colin Smith’s Shortlees lifted their first Scottish Amateur Cup since 2018 in May after defeating Drumchapel Amateurs at Hampden Park.
The Lees have recently competed in their first-ever Senior Scottish Cup fixture in the preliminary round, narrowly loingt out 3-2 to Dundee North End on 1 August.
