The countdown is on for the return of the Mauchline Holy Fair, with organisers promising the biggest celebration yet when the historic event returns this weekend.

The annual fair takes place on Saturday, May 30 across the East Ayrshire town, bringing together live music, family entertainment, heritage and community spirit in honour of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns.

The free event recreates the atmosphere of the traditional fairs Burns himself would have attended, while blending modern attractions and performances for visitors of all ages.

Festivities will begin with the traditional lone piper performing from the church tower before the much-loved parade makes its way through the town.

Participants dressed around the theme of “Keeping Burns Alive” will join pipe bands and community groups in procession towards Loudoun Street for the official opening.

Five free live music stages, including the return of the Burns’ Howf stage and the Jean Armour Stage.

Families can also enjoy a packed children’s programme featuring workshops, live entertainment and interactive activities.

Elsewhere, visitors can browse more than 100 market stalls showcasing local makers, bakers, crafters and community organisations, while vintage vehicle displays, live art demonstrations and funfair rides.

Organisers say excitement is “already building” ahead of the event, with preparations now underway across the town.

The Holy Fair derives from a satirical Burns poem, of the same name, written in 1785 during his time at Mossgiel Farm, telling of the “moral tug-of-war’ with people between the kirk and public house.

The modern family-friendly recreation of the historic festival was brought to life in the early 2000s, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.
